Bird Box by Josh Malerman - something is out there and if you see it you go mad. Malorie decides to leave the house where she has lived with her children the last four years to try to find a safe place. And she has to make the trip blindfolded, using her children as her ears. The story goes back and forth between the journey and what has lead up to it. This book made me really nervous, I didn't have a clue how it would end. A little gruesome in parts. Also, one of the most beautiful dedications I've read.

The Son by Jo Nesbo - this is a stand alone, not part of his Harry Hole' series. Sonny has spent almost half his life in prison when he discovers something about his father and escapes. He begins revenge killing. The police and criminals are looking for him. Although Sonny is also a criminal and does some horrendous things, I somehow found myself rooting for him. A couple of unexpected twists at the end. I really like the way this author writes. Would be rated R for violence if it were a movie.

The Flatey Enigma by Victor Arnar Ingolfsson - The Flatey Saga is a real book that is a collection of Icelandic sagas. The story is built around a riddle posed by the sagas. An unidentified body is found on an uninhabited islet close to Flatey island. The story takes place in 1960 and is a good look at how the islanders live. In between each chapter is a portion of the Saga. Usually gruesome. There are so many Icelandic names and places that I had a little trouble keeping track of things.

He is only awake one hour a day, 3 a.m. to 4 a.m. One night he hears a woman scream and sees a man coming out of her house - the President. This was a free ebook and I really enjoyed it. Parts were amusing but it was also a little crude in places.

Wife of the Gods by Kwei Quartey - a murder investigation set in Ghana. Inspector Donnie Darko is sent to the same town his mother disappeared from 25 years ago to investigate a murder. He's hot tempered and sometimes lets that get the best of him when dealing with suspects. He's not always a law abiding policeman. It was interesting to read a mystery set in a country I'm not familiar with. I'll be reading the next in the series.

Cocaine Blues by Kerry Greenwood - the first Phyrne Fisher novel. I have watched the first season of the Miss Fisher mysteries but my sister told me the books were different enough to read. Phyrne is a wealthy (although not always so) single woman in the 1920's. She is asked to go to Australia to find out what is wrong with a young woman. She gets caught up in a cocaine ring. Some s*x scenes. A little too much description of what she's wearing and eating.

The Other Story by Tatiana De Rosnay - Nicholas is an unambitious young man who finds out something unexpected about his family. He writes a book that becomes a best seller and almost immediately falls in love with fame and fortune. I found him very unsympathetic at first. The story meanders quite a bit, going back and forth from the present to what led him to write the book. Quite a bit of explicit sex which I didn't expect. The last two chapters raised this from 2 to

Bad Things Happen by Harry Dolan - David Loogan is befriended by a man, becomes an editor for his mystery magazine, and starts an affair with his wife. When the man is killed, David is one of the main suspects. This was a pretty twisty one with no one knowing what's going on. Things are revealed but maybe that's not the whole truth. The first in a series, I'll be reading the next.

I have to wait until Oct for the next book to come out.

A Room Full of Bones by Elly Griffiths - the 4th Ruth Galloway mystery. Drugs, horses and old bones are all mixed together in a story that was just a little too mystical for me. And in my last review I said I was getting involved with the characters but this time it's a little too soap operaish. I think I'd better wait awhile before the next one.

A Betrayal of Trust by Susan Hill - a Simon Serrailler novel. I like these stories but sometimes Simon's character is not very sympathetic and he's at his worst here. The bones of a girl missing for 16 years are found and Simon is in charge of the investigation. That part goes pretty slowly but there are lots of other people to wonder about. Not everything is wrapped up and I hope it is at least mentioned in the next book.

He lives and works in the Tower of London and somehow finds himself the keeper of the new zoo. In the meantime, he and his wife are still having difficulty dealing with the death of their son. This book is filled with facts about the tower, I'm going to assume they're true.

Carnal Curiosity by Stuart Woods - okay, pretty sure this is the last Stone Barrington novel I read. Hopefully I can control my series OCD. When Stone is having s*x three pages into the book with someone he's had a 10 min conversation with it's time to throw in the towel. The plot was muddied with former book characters thrown in for no apparent reason. I wonder if Mr Woods even writes these anymore, seems like a new one is out every 6 months.

The House at Sea's End by Elly Griffiths - this time Ruth Galloway becomes involved in the discovery of six bodies buried near the sea. It looks like murder. Were they Germans trying to invade in WWII? This is my favorite so far of the series. I'm getting quite caught up in the character's lives.

With them are a designer of outdoor equipment and her daughter. While Anna is canoeing, armed men burst into camp and take the women hostage. It's up to Anna to save them.

The Janus Stone by Elly Griffiths - once again Ruth Galloway finds herself involved in a decades old murder investigation. And now someone is threatening her life. Pretty exciting at the end and with a twist. I'm getting involved in the two main characters lives now and will try to read the 3rd in the series soon.

It was interesting to see how sometimes his idea for an article took a completely different turn when he started investigating it. I had to skip the chapter about parents who accidentally left their children in hot cars.

However, the clinical and detailed sex scenes and other descriptions of personal details really were unnecessary and distracting. I had hoped this would be the start of a new series for me but I won't be continuing.

The Name of the Wind: The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss - a fantasy that takes forever to tell and then of course is part of a trilogy or more. Took me awhile to get through this as I kept putting it down. There seems to be a lot of nothing happening and then there will be a little action. And yet I will probably read the second book because I want to know how much more nothing there will be before we know what's going on. I'm wondering if the author knows since the third book was supposed to be published this year but it will be 2015 instead.

The Shadows in the Street by Susan Hill - the 5th in the Simon Serrailler series, it takes some time before Simon makes an appearance. Prostitutes are being murdered and then other women go missing. Again quite a bit of family life going on.

The Name of the Wind: The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss - a fantasy that takes forever to tell and then of course is part of a trilogy or more. Took me awhile to get through this as I kept putting it down. There seems to be a lot of nothing happening and then there will be a little action. And yet I will probably read the second book because I want to know how much more nothing there will be before we know what's going on. I'm wondering if the author knows since the third book was supposed to be published this year but it will be 2015 instead.

Concealed in Death by J.D. Robb - an Eve Dallas story. Bodies are found concealed in the wall of a building being demolished. This book was a little longer than normal and didn't seem quite as intense. It also seemed to be much more foul mouthed than previous books. There are of course the obligatory sex scenes that are easily skipped. I read these for the character development but I think the author is getting tired, this is the 38th in the series, and she also writes as Nora Roberts.

The Merchant's House by Kate Ellis - the beginning of a new series, published in 1998. Detective sergeant Wesley Peterson has transferred from London to Tradmouth and finds himself investigating a murder on his first day. As an amateur archaeologist, he's also interested in a dig his friend in doing in town where two bodies are found. I liked the characters and I'll continue the series.

Precious Thing by Colette McBeth - a news reporter is called to a missing person story and finds that is her best friend. Just when you think you know what's going on there's another twist. Just the kind of book I like.

Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi - Boy runs from her abusive father and marries a man with a young daughter. When she has her own daughter she discovers her husband is a black man passing for white. The blurbs made this sound like the retelling of a fairy tale but I didn't really get that. I felt this book could have been so much more. Didn't really get it and really disliked the end.

The Vows of Silence by Susan Hill - another Simon Serailler novel. A gunman is killing young women who are either recently married or about to be. There's also a family crisis which is given at least as much time as the mystery.

52 Steps to Murder by Steve Demaree - a cozy mystery featuring two older, out of shape detectives. Lots of time going over and over the suspects but I was still surprised at the end. Not especially well written but because of the humor I gave it

Angel Fire by Lisa Unger - writer Lydia Strong is dreading the anniversary of her mother's murder when she begins to suspect there is a serial killer at work where she is now living. Lots of anguish and unrequited love. Didn't really care about the characters in this one.

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin - the life of a widowed book seller is changed drastically when a baby is left in his store. Each chapter begins with a synopsis of a short story. Some language. I loved the way this was written.

The Armada Boy by Kate Ellis - a Wesley Peterson book that once again connects a murder in the present with bodies found at archeological digs. I was quite surprised at the outcome.

The Ice Princess by Camilla Lackberg - a woman's suicide is found to be murder. Many viewpoints and all mixed together instead of having a chapter to themselves. I was surprised by the murderer but there were too many competing storylines in this one.

Elaine's Circle:A Teacher, A Student, and One Unforgettable Year by Bob Katz - read this book after seeing it on a friend's blog. A true story of a boy with cancer and how his 4th grade class rallies around him due to the influence of their teacher. I didn't really care for the writing but liked the story.

America Through the Lens: Photographers Who Changed the Nation by Martin W. Sandler - another book found on a friend's blog. This is a YA book about different photographers who took photos of the country or of social ills. Interesting, and I think I'll do some more reading about some of them.
